On February 20, 2024, CGAI hosted its first inaugural Energy Analyst Summit to explore the central questions facing Canadian energy policy and industrial planning.

Rory Johnston is a Toronto-based oil market researcher, the founder of Commodity Context, a lecturer at the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, as well as a Fellow with both the Canadian Global Affairs Institute and the Payne Institute for Public Policy at the Colorado School of Mines. He is a leading voice on oil market analysis, advising institutional investors, global policy makers, and corporate decision makers.
His presentation is titled “Barreling Ahead: Global Oil Market Expectations through 2024”.
9:00 am – 9:30 am: Raoul LeBlanc Presentation
Raoul LeBlanc is Vice President, Energy, with a focus on North American unconventionals at S&P Global Commodity Insights. He leads the development and commercialization of data products and is key in directing research and forecasting for onshore North America oil and gas production.
His presentation is titled, “Observations on Assessing the Impact of Declining Oil (Then Gas) Demand”

9:30 am – 10:00 am: Thomas Liles Presentation
Thomas Liles is a VP of Upstream Research at Rystad Energy, where he covers the Canadian upstream space with a focus on oil sands research, short-term oil supply and egress trends, and production modeling for other unconventional supply sources. He holds an M.A. from Harvard University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and a B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
His presentation is titled “Assessing Demand, Egress, and Policy Risks to Canadian Supply Growth”.
10:00 am – 10:30 am: Bryce van Sluys Presentation
Bryce van Sluys is Director, Energy Outlooks at the Canada Energy Regulator. Prior to his career with the Canada Energy Regulator, Bryce worked as an economist at the Government of Alberta. He holds a Master’s degree in Economics from Queen’s University.
His presentation is titled “Canada’s Energy Future 2023 Key Findings”.

10:45 am – 11:15 am: Janetta McKenzie Presentation
Janetta McKenzie is manager of the oil and gas program at the Pembina Institute. She works on energy policy development, natural gas certification, and industrial decarbonization in Canada. Prior to joining the Institute, Janetta completed a Ph.D. at the University of Waterloo, analyzing the socio-political impacts of pipeline regulation in Canada and the United States. She also holds master’s degrees from the University of Sydney and London School of Economics.
Her presentation is titled “Preparing for a Net Zero Economy: Designing Effective Policy to Reduce Emissions and Navigate Uncertainty”.
11:15 am – 11:45 am: G. Kent Fellows Presentation
Kent Fellows is an Assistant Professor in Economics and Master’s of Public Policy Graduate Program Director at the University of Calgary’s School of Public Policy. He is also a Fellow-In-Residence at the C.D. Howe Institute as an academic advisor and contributor to the Institute's Energy Policy program. Kent specializes in multiple areas of Microeconomics including Competition Policy, Regulatory Economics, Energy Economics and Regional/Transportation Economics.
His presentation is titled “Last Barrel Standing? Canadian Oil Sands Production in the Long Run”.
