The Prairie Shield initiative is made possible through the support of the Government of Alberta and Prairies Economic Development Canada (PrairiesCan).

Prairie Shield is a strategic initiative led by the Canadian Global Affairs Institute (CGAI) to position Alberta and broader Western Canada as a primary engine of Canada’s next-generation defence industrial growth. This initiative is designed to advance Alberta and Western Canada’s defence pillars, industrial strengths, and long-term positioning within Canada’s evolving defence industrial base to maximize future Canadian national security.

Activities focus on Alberta’s defence industrial strength in the context of relevant Defence Industrial Strategy (DIS) sovereign capability areas:
- Uncrewed systems
- Energetics and munitions input
- Testing and evaluation infrastructure
- Arctic sustainment
- Alberta defence industrial strengths
