With Russia snapping at NATO's heels and much of the Middle East and North Africa in turmoil, a leading strategic analyst has urged Spain to see the value of Gibraltar as guardian of the Mediterranean.
Professor Julian Lindley-French, Vice-President of the Atlantic Treaty Association, argues that the Rock is not just a vital adjunct to Spain's economy, but also vital to its security. He says Gibraltar's importance to British, European and the security of a wider world cannot be overstated.
Professor Lindley-French was a guest at the dinner hosted last week by the Governor in honour of the Commander of the US Army in Europe, General Ben Hodges. He predicts that the UK's new super aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth will spend much of its life operating from Gibraltar deep into the Med, helping to ease the pressure on the US Navy to be everywhere, in strength, all of the time.
