SYNOPSIS
Join the Canadian Global Affairs Institute for a webinar looking toward the 2024 United States Presidential Election and its implications for Canada.
In this 60-minute webinar moderated by Colin Robertson, The German Marshall Fund's Bruce Stokes will present the result of polls exploring public opinion following the ascendancy of Kamala Harris as the Democratic candidate and the second Presidential debate between Harris and Trump. He will then be joined by former Canadian Ambassadors to the USA David MacNaughton and Gary Doer, as well as former Canadian Ambassador to the UN Louise Blais to discuss possible impacts of the next US President on Canada, and how we can navigate these turbulent waters.

Bruce Stokes is a visiting senior fellow at the German Marshall Fund, and senior editor of the 2022 Transatlantic Trends Survey. Previously, he was the director of Global Economic Attitudes at the Pew Research Center in Washington, DC, and is a former international economics columnist for the National Journal, a Washington-based public policy magazine. He is also a former senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations.

David MacNaughton is the Canadian President of Palantir Technologies, a data analytics and software firm based in Denver, Colorado. Prior to this appointment, he was Canada’s 24th Ambassador to the United States for three and a half years. In his capacity as Ambassador, David was a key member of the Canadian team that renegotiated the North American Free Trade Agreement. He travelled extensively in the United States and Canada, building support for Canada’s position in the negotiations and seeking input from Canadian Premiers and business and labour leaders across Canada. |

Gary Doer was the 23rd Canadian Ambassador to the United States and former Premier of Manitoba. He is currently volunteering as Co-Chair of the Wilson Center's Canada Institute, based in Washington, D.C., and serves on the CGAI Advisory Council. He hails from Winnipeg, Manitoba, and is married with two daughters. |

Louise Blais is a senior special advisor to the Business Council of Canada and Diplomat in Residence at the University of Laval. Louise was Canada’s Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York from 2017-2021. As a senior diplomat, she served abroad in Washington and Tokyo and as Minister-Counsellor for Political Affairs at the Embassy in Paris. In 2014 she was appointed Consul General of Canada in Atlanta, covering North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi. |
