Table of Contents

Synopsis

Always a trading nation, especially since the negotiation of the Canada-US FTA in 1988, Canada has become a nation of traders. Trade in goods and services, as well as investment has expanded throughout the world. But now Donald Trump and his America First policies put the recent gains at risk.

How should Canada respond?

The day-long State of Trade conference, drawing together parliamentarians, government practitioners, trade policy experts, business executives, diplomats, and other key stakeholders will look at these themes:

  • Positioning Canada against Protectionist Forces at home and abroad
  • Making Trade Deals – CETA, CPTPP, China, India, et al
  • The Progressive Trade Agenda: What is it and how do we make it work for Canada?
  • ‘America First’: How do we Manage?
  • Getting Goods to Market: What we need to do
  • Reconciling International Ambition with Domestic Interests: Intellectual Property, Rules of Origin, Supply Management
